There's a 10-episode true crime series starting on Monday, January 22nd, on TNT. It takes place in New York City, 1896. It's based on a book, I think of the same name. There's a peek preview on Sunday, January 21st. www.thealienist.com/discover

I'll be watching this one too. I read the book in the '90's. Captivating, Caleb Carr really good writer. This book spawned a whole bunch of 'gaslight' mysteries, most notably for me the series by Victoria Thompson.

I'm fond of Victorian adventure tales and mysteries, so I'll at least watch the pilot.

When you watch the series, I hope you post here about it here. And also, Fred and I hope Deb does, too. (an maybe Raybar--but Bob doesn't have a TV). I so want to have FACTS become the kind of message where lots of people come to post and converse like the other message board I've come to know and is so friendly with hundreds of members. I'd like FACTS to be that kind of board. But I'm also very sure that the other members of FACTS also belong to other message boards, too. And they're having other interesting experiences there, as well. So, I guess meeting up often here is happening as well. So, that's a good thing. We have our places, and here with each other, too.

Thank you for your kind words lily. Hope the series will be worth talking about!! I have become accustomed to watching various series on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon where all the episodes are released at once, allowing me to watch the next one before I forget what I saw on the last one. I won't be watching the sneak preview, it conflicts with Victoria on PBS Masterpiece.

We've become spoiled, I guess. That's why I purchased Ten Days in The Valley series on Amazon so I could watch binge-wise and also NO commercials. And I purchased the Lost series to binge watch that, too. It makes sense nowadays to not watch a series as it airs and then watch the whole series at once. Maybe I should get back with Netflix. Happy to see you here! I hope the series will be good enough to discuss.

Anyone view the sneak preview of The Alienist last night? Tonight is the first episode. I'm not sure how the sneak preview is going to be different from the first episode. I'm hoping and assuming it'll be starting more in the way of explanations of the era of New York City vis a vis the show and the characters. I was a bit confused about who each one was at first. They all basically seemed to look alike except for the ones with facial hair, and even then. I think I'm going to like this series. Yes, it is gory and sad that it's about children being murdered by a perverted maniac.

Didn't see the preview, but I would be very surprised if the preview and the show were any different. Previews are generally made up of footage from the show, perhaps with some out-takes or behind-the-scenes footage.
TNT really wants me to see it. They're showing it three times this evening here, at 6, 7, and 8.

I have to say that this is very interesting. The case was introduced, but no real clues have been given. The characters seem to be the kind that will turn out to be more complex as time goes on -- and you can't argue with the setting.
I really think I'm sticking with this ...

I skipped the preview. I'd rather not know too much in advance. And I DVR shows so I can fast forward through the commercials the next day. I'm spoiled and become irritated if I have to watch a show in real time. LOL
Typical one-hour shows these days run about 42-43 minutes, with the rest of the time being commercials. Which means that you have to put up with about 15 minutes of ads per hour. 8-<

The Alienist reminded me of the Canadian series Murdoch Mysteries which "takes place in Toronto starting in 1895 and follows Detective William Murdoch . . . of the Toronto Constabulary, who solves many of his cases using methods of detection that were unusual at the time." Instead of a detective, The Alienist features a doctor, Laszlo Kreizler, trying to develop new investigative techniques, but it's looks like it will be a similar story. And the female lead in both shows is a young woman (Hélène Joy as Dr. Julia Ogden in Murdock, Dakota Fanning as Sara Howard in Alienist) trying make her way in the male-dominated world of the 1890s. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murdoch_MysteriesThe premier episode was fine but, as always, the story will have to keep my interest, and I will need to enjoy spending time with the characters, if I am to continue watching. I am expecting at least one of the innocent characters to look like he's the murderer, but that the actual murderer will turn out to be someone you would never suspect, perhaps even someone we have already met. One bit of dialog from Dakota Fanning at the beginning of the episode, where she demanded respect from the men, seemed a little too 2018 for a show set in 1896. A woman in 1896, particularly one with the courage to enter the business world at the time, might insist on being treated professionally, but not with the sort of dialog we hear today from the radical left.

The dialogue of the "radical left"? What pray tell would that be?
Personally, my thoughts are that she had to be introduced this way as a "strong" woman to explain why, how, and in what way her character will be a major part of the investigation. That's my prediction, anyway. And it's actually already started.

From the description of what the sneak preview would be, I thought it would be something like Raybar's description.

I enjoyed everything except the frequent commercials. I know what you mean. And they are sneaky because if you decide to change the channel for the period of the commercials, most all the other channels have commercials at the same time. I guess so that you don't get interested in the show on the other channels and don't come back to the one you were watching.

The pilot was interesting enough that I plan to watch a couple more, at least.
One thing that bothers me is the modern tendency of movies and TV show to darken or use a color filter on things set in the past. Yes, a room at night in 1896 would be fairly dark, but when they're outside in the daylight, the colors should be normal, not muted. I love the CGI recreation of the old city, but I want it to not be so dark that we can't see the details. The "Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries" set in the 1920s in Australia is much better with their dark/light sets. Imagine the Liz Taylor movie "Cleopatra" done with a dark filter over the beautiful sets and costumes. Sacrilege. 8->
In some ways, all the shows set in Victorian cites are similar. Rampant political corruption, filth and disease in the streets, etc. Did any of you watched the "Ripper Street" series about a London cop? Or the J. Depp film "From Hell"? Also similar to Cinemax's "The Knick", set in New York in 1905 or so.
If I were alive in those days, I could not live in New York, London, or any such place. Way too depressing. Unless, of course, I were rich and could isolate myself from the world around me. LOL
I guess I need to read the two books.

Yes! I was going to mention that and forgot to. What is it with the need for gloomy dark foggy/smoggy atmospherics? The same thing with the Gotham TV series. What happened to daylight?

Tonight I will be starting a new series on WGN, called "Bellevue" starring Anna Paquin. It is about the disappearance of a transgender teen in a small conservative town. I'll let you know if I like it enough to continue.

Yes, lily, the station's full name is WGN America. And while the show was interesting, I don't know if I have the patience to continue. Have to admit at 10 pm I'm a little woozy!

Whatever you have to do, get a DVR. It's well worth the price and/or effort. Mine can record up to 4 shows at the same time. I can be watching one show and it could be recording 4 others, if I want it to. Then I can watch them any time I want and fast-forward through all the commercials. I LOVE my DVR. 8->

Hi fred. My son keeps asking me if I want a DVR. Sure I do, but the problem is my son pays my huge cable bill, because he wants to (very much) and I don't want to add another penny to the bill. Recently, I had the bill cut $25. per month by going 'triple play' and the salesman quoted $18., I believe, to add a DVR, pushing by saying I'm still saving money. I told my son the whole conversation, reiterating that I felt good lessening the bill, but not good adding to it. He listened. Let him save $25. per month for awhile and ask me again & this time I will say yes. I want one for the pause feature as much or more as I want the tape & fast-forward features. I hate watching a movie on HBO or Showtime & having to go to the bathroom!!!!!!!
The only show I regularly tape is my soap "The Young & the Restless" & use my VCR. If that broke I would definitely ask my son for the DVR he already wants me to have. That would be a CRISIS situation after all!!!! So, this is my DVR story.
Through my son's accounts I also have Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, so I do have access to pause & except for Hulu, be totally commercial free.
P.S. I don't have a smart phone either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not MY $25., that's my point. If I offered it to him, he'd refuse me, so I'd be spending someone else's money. I cost him enough, that is what concerns me. & yes, my son refers to me as 'cheap Jew' on many occasions. Since I'm a Jew, I'm allowed to say that!

Episode 2
It's progressing very slowly (in terms of developing as a mystery). However, its greatest strength lies in the depiction of the "underbelly" of society contrasted with the life of "high society". One gets the impression the "crime" might be the result of an intersection of the two worlds. It's hinted at broadly (at this point).
The characters grow in interest... I'm still in...
