SPOILER ALERT
I thought that the first episode introduced too many characters. I wasn't able to get the names straight because it was like being at a party and being introduced to everyone at once. Because of this -- I'm going to have to refer to the characters by types rather than names.
The Mom -- I like Kyra Sedgwick as an actress -- but I didn't care for the character she's playing. It didn't take me long to decide she needed some parenting classes. I can't imagine leaving a child asleep in a building with the door open to anyone passing by --- much boozing it up and purchasing cocaine in an adjacent shed/garage. So this character (to me) is totally unsympathetic. I hope this situation changes and the writers will give me some reason to like her. I thought she was okay at first (when she danced with her daughter and cuddled up with her). But when she left the kid -- her judgment was so poor I really didn't find her sympathetic at all. And I found it odd that she went to work when her child was missing even if she thought the Dad took her. That makes me think -- she might have arranged the kidnapping herself for unknown reasons. You'd have to be a total asshat to go to work the same day your child comes up missing. Plus she keeps lying to the police to hide her drug habit (even though the guy on the bike who delivered the cocaine could have been the one who took her child). This woman has a weird sense of priorities.
The Dad -- He seemed more likeable than her -- although I found it odd she was berating him for his former lack of sobriety when she's purchasing cocaine. He seemed to be genuinely concerned about his child's disappearance. Supposedly his alibi is a lie and being backed up by the mom's assistant (who is also having an affair with the Dad. Now this is a personal pet peeve of mine -- but I don't like men or women who have affairs with close associates of their significant others (even if the relationship is over). It's just plain tacky. He may be lying about his alibi, but that doesn't mean he took the kid. He could have been doing something else illegal at the time.
The mom's blonde female assistant -- Struck me as an airhead. She's having an affair with the Dad and lying for him to give him an alibi. She's not loyal to her boss and dishonest for giving the Dad an alibi. She struck me as too stupid to be involved in a kidnap plot.
The Mom's sister -- Seems to be the smartest one in the bunch (not saying much) -- but prone to jump to conclusions. In fact, I found both her and the mom rather stupid for assuming the Dad grabbed the child and basing their response on this premise.
The guy in the car -- I gathered she's writing true incidents as fiction for some show and this fellow is her contact to that world. He's not happy about what she's up to. I think this is going to be a major subplot -- but I don't think this will be the source of the kidnap.
The cops -- not much to say yet -- they're doing what they need to do. I don't think I saw enough of their personalities to say how they will fit into this story.
The disembodied voice reading to the child -- obviously someone paid to watch the kid. But since he's reading bedtime stories to the child (and apparently has let the child see his face) -- I think we can assume the child is safe. I don't think a person would take the time to entertain a child they've kidnapped if they plan on killing the kid. Makes me think it's one of the parents who hired him. I'm leaning (at this point) to the thought the mom might have done this for some kind of custody thing.
Other people the mom works with -- Much like the cops -- they are too generic for me to have an opinion yet.

Okay, I normally wouldn't be up that late except for maybe tossing and turning in bed trying to get to sleep. Last night I was really tired and could have easily fallen asleep at 8:00. Beforehand I watched some of CNN and that's when I watched live the reports of the shooting in Las Vegas. When the show started, I kept switching back to CNN during the commercials.
Anyway, I think they threw too much stuff into that first episode. I did not like it when they threw those movie scenes into the picture and I couldn't tell what part was real and what part of the movie scenes were either in the laptop or inside of Jane's head working on the script. And I wondered what was that baby and little girl doing in the scene? That really confused me thinking those were her children. But then the little girl came in with her nanny. I'm thinking that all that may have been on purpose to get us off balance and to show how off balance Jane was. That woman was totally stressed out with the responsibility she felt on her shoulders. Is that why the wine and cocaine?
And then the anger with her ex-husband and slamming the door in his face and not allowing him to take the girl for another day. She wouldn't have been kidnapped then, would she? The husband is so far an enigma. So we now know that Jane's assistant is his lover. What's that about? I swear, I really don't like anyone so far, except Jane's sister.
And what in the world was Jane doing out in the shed doing her work and leaving the sliding door of the house unlocked? And her daughter in there alone? And then six hours not checking on her except that she had the baby monitor. What mother would do that?
For some reason the ex-husband is using his girlfriend (Jane's assistant) as an alibi for the time of the kidnapping. Why? He says he's clean. If he's not the kidnapper then what terrible thing was he doing at that time that he doesn't want known? Anyway, in spite of that, I believe him that he had nothing to do with his daughter's disappearance.
Then there's the nanny who we see telling her what I'm guessing is her husband that he needs to find the key that was thrown on the ground sometime we don't know how or why. So, is this going to be a kidnap for ransom? Then we see the little girl on a bed and a man reading a book to her and she doesn't appear to be scared, just mad that they didn't bring her favorite books with them. Strange.
So, that's where I'm going to leave my observations for now.

Okay, interesting. We seem to be on the same page as far as our observations go. But I don't think that the mother had anything to do with the kidnapping. And I totally understand why the sister would have thought the ex-husband might had something to do with the disappearance. That certainly would have been the best scenario in all this. He wouldn't have harmed his daughter. And that's why I think Jane went to work believing that is what happened and so wasn't too worried.

Yes -- it does seem we had similar impressions. It makes me wonder if they prescreen these mini series to a target audience. Since we both thought the first episode had enough to make it confusing -- you'd think whoever directed this would have figured it out before it wrapped.

We are watching this tonight, right? I wish it was on Amazon or something. But I will be watching it. It feels like it's months ago that I last watched it. I even thought that I missed the 2nd episode.

I'm using the DVR (I think that's the right series of letters for the thing) to record it. I will probably get to it tomorrow.

I don't have digital so I don't have DVR. And even though I gave away a ton of VHS movies, etc. I still have a lot and so I use a combo DVD/VHS player. It broke and you really can't get new players like that anymore. I do have a refurbished one now, but I haven't installed it yet. I do record TV with that player. But right now, I can't.
It doesn't sound like you'rethat interested anymore? I don't like staying up that late myself, and I've come to believe you're a night owl. I get up usually around 5:30 in the morning, so it's hard when I stay up after 9:30. And when I'm waiting for the show, I'm trying hard not to fall asleep. That's a real insomnia cure. Lol
So, if you're really not interested in carrying on with this, it's okay with me. I'll either stop watching or start recording when I get the new player going. And I'm wondering if the episodes might replay the next day on ABC.com. That would be the best for me.
If you've really lost interest, let me know. It'll be okay with me, although not as much fun.

Debutante, let me know when you get around to viewing this latest episode. I did watch it last night on TV, but I'm really happy to have gotten the login information to be able to watch it online. I'll do that from now on. With no commercials it's only just over 41 minutes long. I think it will only be available the day after it is aired, although I don't know that for sure. I may be able to view it the day of the airing. You have it on DVR so you can watch it anytime, as well.
I'm going to be watching it again today--already started. That's the good thing, being able to pause it between doing other things. I'm still really deciding what I think about this series. I think by the next episode, I'll have more of a definitive opinion. Just happy that I can view it online now.

Lily,
I haven't watched it yet. I woke up feeling under the weather today and couldn't bring myself to do much of anything.
I have a lot of food sensitivities and I ate a couple of things I knew I shouldn't and have been paying the price. As soon as it works it's way out of my system, I'll feel more like concentrating on this kidnapping story.

Okay, let me know when you've watched it. Sorry about the food allergy and hope you feel better soon.
Anyway, the next episode is a week away. Plenty of time to view the current episode before that and to write a commentary.

Well....
My initial impression of episode two is that it was a real snooze fest. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz! It seemed to be a whole lot of nothing rehashing a lot of the things they said last week.
The pacing was so slow....
I don't think we ended up with any substantial clues -- just a hint that a black car (which could have been a black BMW and might have been the Dad's was seen outside casing the house the night the child vanished. And also that the maid is in need of money to bring her daughter over to the US and she's dating a guy with a record (who I think is the gardener?)
Again this series suffers from too many characters none of which is memorable (or particularly likeable).
I am rooting for the kid....but I hate everyone else in her world.
The cop seems an okay guy -- but no back story on him yet -- so they haven't made me care about him yet.
And I wasn't sure who those two women kissing were...
I suspect the phrase about the "secrets" is going to turn out important in some fashion. Just not sure where it's going to tie in.
Overall -- a disappointing episode --- on a scale of 1 to 10 -- I'd give it a three and that's being generous.
You snd I write way better than this!

Okay, I'm not reading your post yet. I still have to finish watching Episode 2 online. I need to refresh my recall of it. I was sleepy when I watched it Sunday night. I'll do it sometime today. Only around 41 minutes so should go fast when I have some down time.

Well, had a rather busy afternoon. A power outage last night fried my dad's 27" $1,500 computer. Thank you, Hawaiian Electric. So, using my time today checking everything out which could possibly have gone wrong and maybe not really fried the computer. The power cord, the power strip, the power outlet, etc. etc., and soon concluded the computer's hard drive was fried. It's an all in one, like a laptop.
So, then he rushed out to buy a new one, and guess who was spending her time setting everything up as much as possible the way it was this afternoon. Thankfully, he uses an external hard drive for the important files, and I remind him to always unplug it when not in use. So, nothing important affected. And then I had to uninstall McAfee and reinstall Norton. My subscription is good for five devices. And I prefer Norton.
Anyway, too tired to watch Episode 2 tonight. I'll do it tomorrow.

Okay, totally frustrated now. I'm trying again to sign into ABC.com to re-watch episode 2 that you have to do by signing into your cable company, which for me would be Spectrum. I had no problem last time to when I did that for episode 1 to see if it would work. But today it doesn't and it's because of Spectrum. Nothing happens for the longest time and I get the message that the website is too busy to open the webpage. Arrrrrrgh! Spectrum is new here. It merged with Oceanic Time Warner Cable or ate it up, which ever it was. And it's already causing problems with our local community broadcasts. That's what happens when these big shots from the mainland come in and take over. I hate it!!!
And now I wonder if my plan to watch the Sunday show the next day online instead is going to work. I really don't like staying up until 10:00. I know it might sound silly to you night owls, but that's just the way it is with me.
In any case, and I don't want to judge on just two episodes, but this series just isn't grabbing me. Not the way the The Sinner did. But I want to give it more of a chance. I'm going to go ahead and read your commentary. I really need a refresher on this anyway.

I agree with everything you said. Except I don't even feel anything for the girl because with all the jumping around, we never even got a chance to know her, either. I don't feel one thing for any of the characters. So, I'll see if I can get into the online episodes tomorrow. If I can't then I'll stay up that night. It may be that the weekend is extra busy on the Spectrum website. But geeze louise, can't that big time cable company spring for more bandwidth?

Okay, I finally found out how to view Ten Days in the Valley online. Just a few days ago I remembered that there was an update to Microsoft Windows, and every time they do this, something changes, and usually to the negative for me--they take away stuff that I like.
Anyway, I got an error code and looking it up, it seems to have something to do with the security certificate of websites. It looked like they screwed up the one for ABC.com. I tried it on AOL, then I tried it on Internet Explorer with the same results. It had to be something to do with the security certificate because the update that looked most relevant was Security Update for Microsoft Windows.
I tried to find a fix for this without having to uninstall the update, but I couldn't find one. My last option after not working with AOL or IE, was Microsoft Edge. And guess what? It worked with that. Thank you very much Microsoft. I hate you.
So, I will be watching the next episode of Ten Days in the Valley online on Monday.

Episode 3 --
Well...I have to say this was a surprise after last week. The pacing totally changed and moved things along very fast.
I did determine who the kidnapper was about ten minutes before the "reveal", but now I am wondering why they gave this information when there are still seven episodes left.
I need to watch this a second time because I ran it around 3AM before I went to sleep. I want to make sure I didn't miss anything worth noting.
Overall impression -- much improved over last week's episode

Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.
Okay, better, only because along the way they cleared up some of my questions. Like, who was that Kanye West look-alike guy sleeping with Jane? Now we know.
I'm confused still about Jane's sister and another look alike who is an employee on the set. Are they the same person named Eli, or is Eli not the sister as I thought she was? Or is she both?
And who were those people at the golf course, and what had the corrupt cops got to do with anything? Will this part get developed?
So Matt got himself cleared as a suspect. So now we have Pete, the father. But guess who else now?--Pete's girlfriend Kathryn and now unbeknownst to Pete, his kids's kidnapper? Weird, very weird. And this Kathryn, Pete's girlfriend, and Jane's assistant, now told the cops on Jane about her cocaine habit and PJ, Jane's supplier, who came there to Jane the night of the kidnapping. Why, if not to throw off the cops from suspecting her?
Well, at least we have seven more episodes to get more clarity on this whole thing.

Okay, so we have this tangled mess, and Casey-Jane's assistant--has got herself where she didn't expect herself to be. Well, sorry, lady, you're getting what you deserve. And there's even a possibility of "getting rid of" the girl. Evil people--evil, evil, evil. Stupid people. I don't like or feel sorry for any one of them. And who the hell is Eli/Ali anyway? I thought she was Jane's sister, and now I see she is trying to get pregnant but for her unemployed husband and it seems hoping to use her sister/friend to get him a job? Lots of confusion still.
