I couldn't find any mention of this on the NASA or JPL websites (perhaps I missed it), but sometimes a rock is just a rock.

Well, of course it's a rock (unless it's a Martian!). The question is how did it get there.

Well, you wouldn't expect the venerable scientists at NASA to admit to being "stumped", would you? At best they're going to be "puzzled". They haven't been able to explain how the rock got there.
I've been looking closely at the photos. One thing I noticed is that the tiny pebbles around the rock are in the same position in the before and after photos. Bit of a mystery how the new rock arrived without disturbing any of them.
Anyway, I'd like to think that the Martians snuck out and put the rock in front of the camera just to yank NASA's chain.

Nah! That's Mars, after all. Everyone knows that "rocks" on Mars aren't all they seem....

Hehe! Wearing a fedora on Mars... and the hat stays on even when he gets into a fight, and when he's carried upside down. They must have glued it to his head.
On a serious note (b flat?) I always believed there was water on Mars, and I still think there's probably life there. Who knows what form it could take? We have rock-like creatures here on earth...

I think I noticed something on the left edge of that last image. Heh....no seriously though. It really could be some kind of mirage... Either that or...and this is just a guess on my part...it's a rock, kicked up by the rover's treads... Nah!
