some subtle protest against russian oppression of homosexuals happening with the winter olympics in sochi . obama sending billie jean king and brian boitano to represent US in the opening ceremonies. germany has rainbow uniforms.
france is not even going to attend the olympics in protest.
i am not sure about the non-attendance approach....think that not fair to the athletes. i kind of like the in-your-face approach of obama and germany.

Dear Terri:
Actually, I think the issue of homosexuality shouldn't be clouding the Olympics AT ALL.
I admit I might be biased, as one of my nephews was an alternate for the summer games and is probably going to end up either in or as an alternate in the next summer games. I think these athletes deserve their "moment" to be about them and what they do. I think the homosexuals get enough press attention as it is and I don't agree that their issue should be piggy-backed on a sporting event.
That being said, I will also admit that I am a terrible aunt. I have never gone to one of my nephew's events, and probably won't go even if he keeps the spot that he will undoubtedly earn for the USA team next time around. Even so, when I see my nephew (which, admittedly is very rarely as he lives in another state) -- I am always struck by the glowing enthusiasm he has for the whole Olympic concept.
I read his Facebook page often and he communicates daily with athletes around the world. We just see a small part over a few days every four years of their lives. These people are constantly training and continually competing in events all over the globe even if the public doesn't bother watching. For example, my nephew was in the 2013 ITU WTS San Diego race six days ago. And I've no doubt he's already got another event lined up somewhere else in the world.
I totally disagree with liberals who feel the homosexual issue should intrude upon these athelete's main event. The Olympic games are something these athletes, by right of working toward them every single day of their lives -- belongs to them. They've earned their moment and nobody should take it from them.

Dear Deb:
Instead of this:
"I totally disagree with liberals who feel the homosexual issue should intrude upon these athelete's main event."
I wish you wrote this:
"I totally disagree with those who feel the homosexual issue should intrude upon these athelete's main event."
Love, your friend, Joan

Agreed! Putin is an asshole. But using non-attendance in the Olympics to protest isn't fair to the athletes. The Olympics should not be for political protests. Otherwise we will have countries protesting all sorts of things and that will destroy the spirit of the Olympics. Bob

Dear Joan:
It's probably good you called me on it. Sometimes I don't think clearly as I'm writing.
By the way, I really am a terrible aunt. I misread his Facebook --- he posted a photo of the 2013 ITU WTS San Diego race he was in on his page six days ago -- I assumed it was from that day. I guess the race was awhile ago. Honestly, I am such a terrible aunt -- I love him so -- but as hard as I try I just HATE sports! So although my husband will say something like, "our nephew is racing today" -- half the time I don't know where or when and really don't care. LOL!
However, he is such a sweet natured fellow that you can't help but love him. I just don't understand how anyone can devote their lives to sports. It baffles me.

teriYou're only realizing now that Putin is an asshole? Actually he's something far worse than that. A very dangerous individual, not much different from Adolf Hitler in his psychopathy. He was a KGB assassin before he went into politics, which should tell you everything you need to know about him.

knew putin was an asshole for some time now, only figuring it out about you right now, blarney boy. interesting the kgb assassin past...is that true?
deb, can appreciate your perspective, i think the new russian law could theoretically land some athletes in a russian jail or deported....so it is a concern on that front. i find it hard to pass up the opportunity to call russia on human rights violations at a world level event.
i understand the olympics are quite a debaucherous for the athletes, lots of hook-ups going on ....imagine all those beautful buff bodies at their prime. sex straight and gay both.....

Dear Terri: LOL! Well, he's a cutie (Can't see his face in this photo, but you can see he's very muscular--personally, I think he's a little too thin though and always make sure to stuff him with food whenever he's in town.) He claims he eats an enormous amount of food, but burns it all off. I don't know if I believe that -- he seems way too thin. I am not worried about debauchery -- he's really a nice guy. Plus, he's recently "off the market" -- he got engaged to a girl just before Thanksgiving. I think she's some kind of athlete too -- swimming? I've only seen a photo of her and she looked to be wearing a competitive styled swimsuit. --Debutante Edited to add: I tried to make the image larger -- I can't. Sorry.

"knew putin was an asshole for some time now, only figuring it out about you right now"
Were you born offensive, or is it a symptom of an acquired personality disorder?
