What do I think? I think the Middle East is a hell hole, however one wants to spin it. Why or why when their culture was so advanced at one time, did it come to this? Because of greed. Those in power wanted complete control of power and of the dividends of oil. That is the answer, whatever the question you might ask. Greed and control. Period. You think Assad's wife shops in Paris for nothing?

Also, I think if that were true, we would known it by know. It's nothing but a conversative crap. And in any case, it doesn't excuse using Assad for using chemical warfare on his own people to keep in power. That generation has been in power for a long time. Assad should be hanged from the nearest tree. And his wife, too.

Dear Lily:
Regarding human greed:
When I was in my twenties, I had a philosophy professor who brought up this topic and pointed out that if all the resources in the world were collected and equally distributed among everyone -- it wouldn't last long. As he said at the time, some people are just craftier than others and in due time would manage to get more than their fair share. I remember the more idealistic aspects of my personality were outraged by this thought -- and at the same time, my more pragmatic side knew that what he said was true.
Unfortunately, you can't legislate caring for your fellow man -- it's either in someone's character or it isn't. I am sure this Paris shopping wife doesn't even give a moment's consideration as to whether her designer items are an excessive use of cash that could be better distributed amongst the poor.
It is what it is. It isn't fair. It isn't right. It isn't just. And as my professor pointed out -- it's unlikely to be permanently changed.
In the final analysis, what matters is our own personal behavior. That's really the only thing we have control over.

Deb, I agree with you completely that in the end that it is only ourselves that we have control over. And also that we are not responsible to cure all the hurt in the world. But it is really difficult to understand that we can't really ourselves do anything about all that. although I do believe that like in the case of the Holocaust, we do need to do something, just because we're fellow human beings. I don't know really in case by case, how much we can do and what we can't. That's the problem. Otherwise, it would be so easy or not considering what the ramifications would be. We just want to live our normal lives and want folks in thier lands to fight for what they want just as the U.S did back then. Is that even realistic now? I sure hope so.
