But seriously, did you know that this was a legitimate debate technique? Have you ever used it in a debate? I never heard of it before, but apparently it is used for debates, I really think it's dishonest. But for interrelationships, I can see how it would be useful, but only sincerely used once in a while to turn down the heat. Used more often, I can see how it would backfire. What do you think?

To really get an answer for each one I'd have to put each one in a separate post. Why is that?

I didn't know what it was. 3)Yes, it is dishonest, but I do see how it can turn down the heat. I heard a story once about a salesman who always got into arguments with his prospective clients. He won a lot of arguments, but he never made a sale! Then he started agreeing with his prospective customers. He would say things like"You're right. My competitor makes a great product; you can't go wrong by buying it!" Once he agreed with them, there was no more argument. Then he could show them that his product was better. Now that is legitimate. He didn't put down the competition. He cooled off the situation. Then he persuaded them that his product was better. Bob

The problem is that once you tell people that they’re idiots or evil for disagreeing with you, they stop listening. Yeah, agreeing is dishonest but it's more effective to tell them how wise and wonderful they are, then nibble away at their stupid beliefs with questions.
Hell, yeah, let’s build that wall. What do you think the final cost will be? And how many new border guards will we have to hire to patrol it? Let’s say a border guard makes $50 a year and some drug lord offers him $100K, tax free, to look the other way – how do we stop that? How do we hire contractors to build it who don’t use illegal aliens for labor? How do we stop people from digging under it, flying over it, or just blowing holes in it? And since only about half the illegals come in from Mexico, what do we do about the other half – the ones who came in on visas and just didn’t go home? What do we do about the farmers and such who can’t find enough laborers to harvest their crops once the illegal supply dries up? And so on.
Just like Trump’s famous “who knew health care could be so complicated”, every major political question is also very complicated. People who spout easy answers typically have never considered all the many, many pieces. Agree with them and then ask questions that expose the problems.
Lily - Try it on Bob and let us know how it works. 8-D

I swear, Fred, you have the temperament of a Buddhist monk. I bet you never yell at your television. And that's a compliment. I wish that could be me. Maybe your suggestion would work with Bob. I could try that. But Bob also has the patience of Job and he will keep at it, and keep at it, until....well, forever. And with Mcans, he has the type of endurance to go on and on, also. The best thing for me is to simply ignore the politics board.

I take that as a compliment, yes? 8->
Yeah, Bob and Mcans get into those debate death spirals that never seem to have a resolution. And it doesn't have to be about politics. I hope that they enjoy the process itself, because there's never a resolution. LOL
Me, I'm content to say that my opinion is that up is down and then go do something else. 8->

That's a strange thing to say, being that you won't spend the time looking up anti-discrimination laws, which any informed person should already know anyway.

If I asked you if there were any philosopher's who you agreed with, would you spend any time reading through what any of them wrote? Wouldn't you tell me to list their positions myself before you made any comments? I will spend time on Google to find supporting links for my arguments. I will also spend time looking for information to refute arguments that I disagree with. But I am under no obligation to do anyone else's work for them. Bob

Bob Don't worry, as soon as you've learned German you'll get to see those German news articles I talked about. By the way, in case you wondered, most academic literature isn't actually available through simple Google searches.

Sometimes news articles have links to academic literature. I've used that in the past to post some academic articles. Bob
