Can someone tell me what is so great about a viewing a solar eclipse? Frankly, I don't care about it, except participating in a solar eclipse party. What else?

Well, any excuse for a party, and any chance to see something rare will generate interest and excitement. This particular rare event, with totality going right across North America, is within easy reach of 300 million people. The news is already showing massive traffic congestion, which was to be expected, and which is the reason I didn't drive up to Oregon.

For many people it produces a strong sense of awe. For others, it's like raybar says, just an excuse to stand outside and have a party. 8->

Actually, for raybar, a party and a sense of awe are not incompatible. I would love to have gone someplace to see totality, which (with or without awe) would have been the coolest thing I've seen in quite a while. Maybe next time.

I'll watch it tomorrow online--maybe.

I'll probably put NASA on a computer and a news channel on a television and sort of monitor what they're saying for a while.

For many people a total solar eclipse is a literal once-in-a-lifetime event.

I watched it together with my parents and my brother. My father had even bought pairs of sunglasses for all of us. I don't remember much about the actual eclipse though, it's possible that we didn't see much because of the weather.
