If you would like to move to Mars, this is your chance. Get your application in now. Limited seating. One way tickets only. www.mars-one.com/en/This project seems very premature to me. How about establishing a base on the moon first to iron out the kinks and be certain that everything will work correctly before heading off to another planet where help from earth will be absolutely unavailable if things go wrong. Everything must work properly indefinitely if it is not to be a suicide mission.

This would be one of the biggest nightmare I would absolutey not entertain. I can just envision my space craft missing Mars and drifting off in space forever, and knowing it before I finally die of starvation and thirst. Also, I recall some of the old Mars space movies where you're looking up at a giant Red Moon, if we do make it to the planet. And then, of course, comes the inevitable Mars giant monsters. And if that doesn't get you, the secret first humans that landed way previously and built an underground city will capture and imprison you into a space creatures zoo.
Does this give you a hint about what I think about the seriousness of such a venture?

And, not to mention, I'd be very, very leery of co-habiting Mars with folks who think this is a good idea.

I think they would only take Fertile FemalesIf a human female gives birth on Mars, would that make the child a Martian?

If a human female gives birth on Mars, would that make the child a Martian? I think so! If the mother was a U.S. citizen, would the child have U.S. citizenship as well? When other countries establish their own colonies, would their children have their own citizenship of the countires of origin? Would Mars simply become another earth with the same old problems? If this is real (which I doubt will EVER happen), then these things will really have to be worked out, and I don't believe for one moment that it will happen in a positive way. The reason I said that I wouldn't want to co-inhabit Mars with people who think it is a good idea, is because I really think folks with anti-social proclivities mostly would want to live in such isolation.

Having now read most of the web site, let me say that the Mars-One project has “stunt” or perhaps “reality tv” written all over it, and strikes me as the sort of thing that might be attempted out of desperation if there were a compelling urgent need to get there as soon as possible, which there is not. The project has also been accused of being either a hoax or a scam. At best, I think it’s simply pointless. If a crew is ever launched, survives the journey, and lands safely, they are likely to spend most of their time maintaining things and staying alive, with little or no research being done.
There is no need to walk on Mars ever, let alone soon. Robotic missions can do a lot of research on Mars, and do it safely, and do it for a small fraction of the cost (money, resources, manpower) of a crewed mission. Over time robotics will increase in intelligence and capabilities, and be able to much more than today’s little rovers can do. We should do all the research we can possibly do with non-manned missions before we consider sending people there.

Seems like NASA is seriously considering a human mission to Mars.

Seems like NASA is seriously considering a human mission to Mars. Yes, Mars eventually, when we are ready, as part of a "unified deep space exploration strategic plan," not on a Mars-One "damn the torpedoes full speed ahead" plan.
