If you've been following my blog, you know that we just went through hip replacement surgery for my girlfriend, Suziema. We had a talk this morning, and brought up all the things she went through before getting down to the actual medical remedy. She was in increasing pain for the past 3 years or so, and had a harder and harder time getting around. I implored her to go to a real doctor, but she kept putting it off, going through acupuncture, massage therapists, and going to the chiropractor. The chiropractor even took x-rays, though Suziema claims she saw a zipper where her pants were, when she wore zipperless pants when they took the picture. I'm giving the chiro the benefit of the doubt, considering faulty memory. But here's a guy, taking money for medical advice and procedures who talked all about sciatica, and spinal adjustment, and took money for x-rays, and never looked at her deteriorating hip bone (a family trait). Years of therapy, continued pain, and nothing near examining what the ACTUAL problem was. These guys even get money from Medicare, and Medicaid. All while offering advice and treatment they claim expertise in. I'm thinking lawsuit. Fraud, malpractice, impersonating a medical doctor, pain and suffering. Suziema is thinking "live and learn". The whole time through this, I deferred to her wishes, and kept thinking it was all BS. But now, I'm pissed.

One of the things I can't get past is her assertion that, "But it was my choice. My decision." I'm thinking the victims of Bernie Madoff were prone to the same thoughts.

I'm dying to put this on my blog and link it to FaceBook, but she's adamant about not causing a ruckus. I know there's at least a modicum of a veil of privacy here, so I can get away with it.

I wish you'd of posted this on the Conversation Forum because there would be more of variety of replies. Most who post on this Main Forum would just simply agree with you. That being said, back in around '98 my left hip really did bother me, especially sitting in an unholstered chair as I did at work. I did see the medical doctor and an x-ray showed a touch of osteooarthritis and nothing much to do about it except for taking an aspririn or something. If it had been something worse and she sent me to a surgeon, I definitely would have tried a lot of other things first. Surgery is drastic and lot of hip replacements have problems along with knee replacements. Anyway, the hip eventually became fine again (stretching too much when not ready can cause problems like that). The thing is, go see a surgeon and you're going to get surgery. That's fairly predicable. But when it's necessay, then you have to do it. But I do think not jumping into stuff like that and trying other things first is an intelligent way to handle it--even if scoffed at by somebody who doesn't have to go through it. P.S. Bernie Madoff? Puleeeeeze....

The point was that the diagnostics were all wrong. Simple X-ray (which the Chiro did) and they still sold it as a problem they could handle, totally missing the real problem, and extending the pain and suffering.

Did an MD ever take an x-ray before all of the other unsuccessful treatments were undertaken? Things show up....my husband is dealing with one hip that has arthritic changes and they are very obvious on the film. One would assume a good chiropractor would also be able to notice those changes....assuming he took an X-ray of the proper area. Sciatica has it's own signature.
There are good therapists, chiropractors, physicians and there are some who are not good. Seems like she encountered some of the less competent practitioners. Have you checked on postings from dissatisfied patients? Do you know where this individual trained? Is licensing up to date? If such an obvious situation was missed, this might not be the first time it has happened. Three years is a long time to suffer, but the medical problem has been addressed and soon, things will be much better. Checking on this individual won't change things for Suziema, but it could help others from having to suffer needlessly.
