Likly how multi-cell organisms got started. Some individual cells banded together long enough or often enough that they simply stopped wandering off on their own and stayed with the group. Amazing how individual bacteria communicating in groups can resemble an animal's cells communicating in a single body. www.wired.com/wiredscience/2013/07/bacteria-wolfpack-biofilm/

I did a bit of googling at lunch today (not much time, admittedly). It seems that there are various theories about how multicellular organisms first evolved, but no clear winner. One surprising finding is that this may have occurred far earlier than had previously been thought. www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/06/100630171711.htmAmazing how individual bacteria communicating in groups can resemble an animal's cells communicating in a single body. Yes, but they're still individuals, although acting together like this they can look like a single entity. So do flocks of birds and schools of fish sometimes.

It seems possible to me that individual single-cells that band together temporarily when conditions are right might become stuck together because whatever conditions that got them together may not go away. Just an idea.

Just an idea. Certainly plausible -- perhaps a mutation that produced a tendency for cells to stick together. Then evolution could make true multi-cellular organisms from those clumps of single-cell forms. And once again I want a time machine so I could go back and see what happened. Experiencing time in a linear mode is very frustrating.
