Research is always welcome - it's good to learn. But these results are anything but surprising. I think you could do such an analysis with any group of people and come up with a similar range of behaviors.
Take sports fans - they range from fanatics who have to see every game, to casual fans who will watch if they have nothing else to do, to everything in between.

Yes, I agree that these categories are mostly too broad and limited, but at the same time is a good start. I wouldn't presume to categorize anyone here, but I hope you won't mind if I do so about you, Fred, since you brought it up, and you can of course correct me. But I'm just doing it for interest purposes. And then I'll do the same for three of the people in my life that I know are some variety of atheist. I think you are mostly category 4) Anti-theist. I won't cut and paste the descriptions because anyone can go and read them for themselves. I could also describe you as category 1) Intellectul atheist/agnostic except for the agnostlic part and I don't think you like being all that vocal about causes. I also don't think you're all that really interested in debate. I also don't think you're much of an activiist except in thought. Okay, for my three friends. One is more like category 6) Ritual atheist. Just really not interested either way but mainly doesn't believe in God or an afterlife. But does like some of the trappings of religion. Two are category 5) Non-theist in that they don't really think about religion, more ho-hum---now. But started off hating religion because of being turned off by Catholic schooling and the nuns. One was actually a boarder at a Catholic school and was treated very harshly. Come to think of it, there is a fourth one in this category and he also attended Catholic school. These three really don't have a problem with other people's belief. They just simply don't care. So, interesting. I never really thought so much about categories, but it does explain a lot.

The categories are very fuzzy. Most people are probably a mix, with maybe a little more of one than the others.

Really? Then why do I come here? 8-D

I do think, however, that this board is not so much debate anymore (except for the Politics/Rant Forum as it stands now--which you yourself said that you don't much like posting there--see, I am aware. ) as it's become more about conversations--both personal thoughts (the conversational forum) and more heavy topics (the other two forums).
