It's no different than a visual artist who has to explain his work because it's not immediately apparent to the viewer. It's not "good" if it needs to be "explained". Are you saying that art is no good unless it's obvious? No room for subtlety, no room for cultural references, nothing to think about?

Does art have to be obvious to be good? What's wrong with a self contained universe? Lots of well respected fiction presents self contained worlds. Fantasy images, particularly if there are a series of them, might be a self contained universe. And what have you got against garbage cans? Even a utilitarian objects are often nicely designed, with pleasing proportions and so on.
