How can we? But what happens if we don't? At some point, the interest on the debt will be greater than the tax revenues. At this point, you don't have to be an Astrologer to see that there will be a big problem in the next few years.

No, we will never pay it off, at least not in our lifetime (I'm 66). Things will drag on for years as they already have done for years. And when things are about to hit the fan, Congress will probably unplug it.

We have a political system that rewards members of Congress for wasting large amounts of money. They will continue to do so as long as they can. Past civilizations have also self-destructed. Even when they saw doom coming, they could not stop whatever they were doing until it was too late. I don't think that we will be any different.
On the bright side, money is only numbers in a computer (pretty much the same as BitCoins, really). When our economic system collapses, we'll still have our human and natural resources for the rebuilding. Some past civilizations destroyed their farmland or workers or whatever and didn't have much left to work with after their collapse. Yes, there will be major riots in all the large cities as millions of the starving poor cut loose in their death agony. But we will still have skilled workers who will survive and lots of natural resources left to work with.
Move to a small town, stock up on non-perishable food, get some water purification tablets, select the weapons of your choice, etc. I expect that there will be a period of chaos for a few months, then things will settle down. Oh, yeah, don't invest in gold. Think zombie apocalypse. Would you trade your gun for gold if there were zombies in the neighborhood? No. Gold is only valuable if civilization DOESN'T collapse. 8->

And when things are about to hit the fan, Congress will probably unplug it. Not even until well after our lifetimes Ray. Most likely the government will just print more money to pay off the bonds. That means bondholders will be getting only a fraction of what they paid, and will not be likely to loan any more money to the U.S. Treasury. Bob Marks

My crystal ball is good for looking through, but doesn't help much with clairvoyance. Was it Neils Bohr who said, "Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future?" We will just have to become ghosts so that we can wait and see what happens.

They are only concerned about the next election and how they can buy enough votes by giving away free stuff. I don't believe it will be an apocalypse though. Just a time of chaos. Astrologically, things reach a critical point next year (2014) when Pluto, planet of extremes, transits opposite the natal Sun of the USA. Nowadays, you don't need Astrology to see that a major crisis is coming. Bob Marks
