Clever stuff, although I'm not sure how practical some bits are. I find it interesting how biofilms of individual bacteria will interact as if they belong to a single organism. Some similar process is probably how multi-cellular life developed. www.wired.com/wiredscience/2014/03/bionic-biofilms/ |

Could this be the earliest stages of some of the biological technology seen in science fiction? I'm thinking' for instance, of some power modules that got infected on one of the "Star Trek" series or the whole ship on "Farscape"

Tweaking genes will, I think, be THE technology of the future. We've already made bacteria that extrudes human insulin and goat's milk with spider silk proteins (for making bullet resistant armor). At this point, the options are very much wide open. And yes, there will be some disasters, sooner or later. But it's too late to turn back.
