Wow, that's a brilliant idea. My only concern would be that folks might get used to not needing to boil bad water, then once the straw stops working (after 1000 liters) they might get sick.

There is also the Lifesaver Bottle which uses little pumps to create air pressure that pushes water through the filters. More expensive, especially at the low end. In fact, they don't offer anything in the $20 range. But they do avoid one potential danger of the straw approach --- the bottom of the straw device is immersed in contaminated water during use.
