I watched a lot of the House and Senate sessions streamed on the internet and on television. Today there were only two--one Democrat (in name only, really) and one Republican (the lone Republican in the Senate) that I had to yell at. Lol

My preference would be to separate the state and religious aspects of marriage entirely. For the state part, any two people (legal age, sound mind, etc.) go to the court house, or post office, or city hall, or wherever, and sign a partnership contract which spells out the rights and responsibilities of a couple under the law. For the religious part, do whatever you want, but it has no legal standing.
