Thank you, Pat. Right now I'm more concerned about how extremely slow my internet online speed has become the last few days. Ask me tomorrow. OMG, how demented have we come concerning our internet communications. LOL I feel safe enough right now, but that may change any minute.
So glad and happy to hear from you. You have no idea. Please don't be a stranger because I truly do appreciate every moment I hear from you, no matter how little or more you think your messages are. I promise I will respond to every one of them.
I will keep this forum posted to whatever happens here with Hurricane Lane.

Glad all is well, well for the moment anyway. Could not believe the weather report when this hurricane showed up. Thank you for your kind words. I’m around every now and again....busy as is everyone else it seems...lol. Mike’s Mom is keeping us pretty busy these days, she’s 95 and insists on staying in her home, with no help from anyone, well that doesn’t include Mike or me. Good thing she lives across the street a few houses down from us. You stay safe, hurricanes...do not like them, experienced many growing up and living near the sea...scary. Keep us informed of your status as long as you can....no in and out of the islands at this point, correct?

So far the Big Island and Maui are getting the heavy rains. The eye of the storm is predicated to stay off shore. Nothing is happening on Oahu yet, but predicted for this evening to start. Lane is still a Cat 4 hurricane but very close to being a Cat 5. Supposedly wind sheer will be slowly weakening it until tropical storm status in the next few days. Nothing is really certain, however. I'm on higher ground so am not worrying about flooding. Those are the people who need to go to shelters. But wow not a great thing when going back to water soaked homes. Ran out yesterday for AA Batteries. Luckily I could still get them. We're stocked up on bottled water, paper towels, and toilet paper. But already were anyway. Got lots of bread and canned tuna. I think I'll fry some Spam to keep in the refrigerator.

I buy re-chargeable AA and AAA batteries these days. Always have charged spares on hand. Also have a little $3 gadget from Amazon that lets me check how much charge is left a particular battery, so I can plan ahead. Also have a nice Kindle that can hold up to 200 or so novels, doesn't need external light and will last a couple of days without a recharge. Austin is a notorious flash-flood city, full of hills and creeks, but the water goes away in a couple of hours, so we never have storms that knock out the power for days and days. Usually 2-6 hours, tops. But I guess I should buy one of those little hand-crank chargers, too, huh? Just in case.
I love the future. 8->
Anyway, Miss L., do stay high and stay dry. High is good, whether location or physical. LOL

Lily, Jim Cantori is in Hawaii on Oahu....RUN!...😁. When he shows up in FL.....😂. We have switched to LED lanterns and store extra batteries nearby. Have extra power thingies for our phones and battery backup for our weather radio. Bottled water, tuna, can opener and extra cold packs in the freezer. Start storing extra ice when alerted to potential severe weather...and around here, some just get out of town...not easy to do from an island in the Pacific. I’m sorry you are facing this monster storm...not many hurricanes impact Hawaii....wish this,one wasn’t either.

Keep us informed of your status as long as you can....no in and out of the islands at this point, correct? Thank you, Pat. Good for Mike's mom that she lives so close to you. She sure is doing good for being 95 and with you and Mike's help. My dad at 91 was also doing really good until he got a back ache and has been mostly in bed for almost four months. Finally his physician referred him to a bone and joint specialist where he found out he had several fracture in his spine. I'm so upset because it took his doctor so long to do that and he could have been on the way to recovery long ago. Staying basically immobile so long is really, really unhealthy. You know, I also couldn't believe that a serious hurricane was on the way. I've been skipping local news and watching mostly cable news and Discovery Investigation. That'll teach me. Lol As long as we have electricity I'll be reporting back about this whole thing. Oh, yes. The airports are open and customers are advised to check with their airlines as to flight information.

High is good, whether location or physical. LOL Which Kindle gives you that many hours of power? I mainly use the lightest one with no microphone but with a back light. I don't use a cover for it. I stick it in my small purse and read when I'm in wait time. Really good. And at night when I don't want to turn on a lamp. And of course when there's a power outage. I just wish the battery lasted longer. I'm not into re-chargeable batteries--yet. Your area sounds good for flood prevention. Very handy. What is a hand-crank charger? What does it charge? Yes, staying high and dry. Blowing in the wind.

Lots of wind on Oahu through the night and today (it's 6:49 a.m. right now). Lane has gone down to Cat 2 and is expected to go down to Cat 1 later today. There's only a small chance that we'll still get hurricane force winds. It'll be more of a tropical storm type weather. There's been pockets of power outages but nothing major. Keeping my fingers crossed. It is really gusty. The trees are wildly dancing and there is some off and on rain. There's been some trees down on roads.

Thanks for the update, Lily. The Weather Channel doesn’t always let one know what’s really happening. I imagine heavy rains are causing problems in some areas....maybe not where you are....hopefully. Stay safe and let us know, if you can, how you and yours are doing.

A local NPR show interviewed a weather person and the head of their Hawaiian news department this morning. They reported 36 inches - - three feet - - of rain on the east side of the Big Island yesterday, along with trees down on roads, streams overflowing their banks, mudslides closing roads, and so on. What fun. Not.

>Which Kindle gives you that many hours of power? ---I have one of the Fires. Watch a lot of TV and movies on it, but if I cut everything off except books, it lasts longer.
>What is a hand-crank charger? What does it charge? ----Everything, I guess. Just seen them in movies and such. Not sure what they do, but they look like useful things to have in an age when everything runs on electricity.

One that I looked at on Amazon had reviews that said that it took a lot of hard, long cranking to get something charged. Maybe not worth it in that case, except I suppose in really dire needs.
