In the "Just Plain Nuts" thread on the Politics board,
A "manners coach." Wow. I was not aware that there was such a profession. But "once upon a time" . . .
In my ongoing quest to bankrupt myself through the collection of old cameras and related treasures, I recently acquired a bunch of vintage educational film strips. Titles included (copyright 1970)
- Manners at School
- Manners at the Theater
- Manners While Visiting Friends
Unfortunately, I have only the film strips and do not have the records that came with them, so I have no idea what was said in the lectures.
Memories of my years on the Audio-Visual Squad are flooding back. I was the only boy in Home Economics class - me and my trusty Bell & Howell movie projector. I learned about setting up your first kitchen in 8th grade, and how you could easily make tasty meals for your husband by following recipes on the back of food packaging. Evidently (this was about 1961 or 1962) the girls were expected to get married and become housewives immediately after graduation.
If manners and cooking don't excite you, how about something from metal shop (from 1954)
- Care & Use of the Drill Press
- Care & Use of the Jig Saw
- Bench Metal Cutting
Or perhaps something automotive from Ford (early 1950s based on the cars shown)
- Selling the Wholesale Market
- Servicing Truck Airbrakes
My current favorite from the "it didn't quite work put that way" department is "What Are Space Stations" (1961) which predicts circular space stations like in the movie "2001 A Space Odyssey." I'll file it with my "Tom Corbett Space Cadet" View-Master reels since things didn't quite work out that way either.
