I am struggling with myself to remain nonjudgmental because ordinarily the one thing I don't like to do is criticize another person's religion. But I've been watching this paranormal television channel [465 in Chicago]. Most days of the week, it runs programs about hauntings of some sort. They usually run back-to-back all day long, so if you have time and interest, it's an all day spookfest.
One of the programs is called "Amish Hauntings" and every program has at least two stories of weird happenings within the Amish community.
I never really knew much about the Amish before seeing this program. Frankly, it's a little sad.
Whether you believe in ghosts or not, these people have an odd way of looking at things. It seems that their list of possible "sins" is far more extensive than what most people would normally consider sin. Really minor things [and believe me when I tell you Catholicism is really rigid, but now seems mild by comparison] are inflated to the degree that they attribute them as cause for full blown demonic possession.
I've seen episodes where they felt people were possessed for the following reasons:
A child accepting a doll with a "face" [apparently Amish children are only allowed featureless dolls], a toymaker utilizing electricity to make toys, a couple with six children living in cramped circumstances buying a larger home for the comfort of their family. The last was supposedly "greed", thus giving the devil an "opening". What expanding family doesn't look for larger living space? That's a pretty normal reaction.
The worst part of this is the Amish community ends up shunning these poor miserable people [who are already being irritated by paranormal events.]
If you've nothing to do. -- turn in for a look see.
As for the other paranormal programs -- I don't know if I believe everything these people say on these programs, but it is fascinating-- so I am hooked. When I am not actively tuned in, I've got the DVD going .
