Good news. Potentially. The problem with Free Market pharmaceutical companies is that many diseases don't have enough victims to be financially worth the effort to produce drugs for them. The demand for last-resort antibiotics is low right now, but someday soon antibiotic-resistance bacteria will be killing millions and it will require several years to crank out new antibiotics. Nice that people are working on new stuff right now. And, Bob, you might just see these guys wandering around New York, collecting dirt to save the world. 8-> www.wired.com/story/how-dirt-could-save-humanity-from-an-infectious-apocalypse/

Did you notice what that guy did? He started his own company. He didn't go to the government. Startup capital came from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a private foundation. Bob

It's a mixed thing. He had to do his own company because the for-profit free-market drug business is failing to protect humanity from the for-certain coming epidemic. So, yes indeed, not a government effort. But it shouldn't have been necessary. If the drug biz corporate officers don't realize that they and their families are also in great danger from drug-resistant bugs, they're too stupid to be running companies. Yeah, your quarterly profits will be up this year, but in 10 years you might have to watch your kids be devoured by flesh-eating bacteria. A little forethought would be nice to see from our overlords. 8->

Along comes a newcomer who starts a new business and turns the old, ossified companies upside down. That is exactly what is happening here. Everyone doesn't have to be smart. Unfulfilled needs attract enough smart people to to fill them. And what do you expect from drug company executives anyway? It's one of the most regulated industries in the country. Their executives are used to dealing with bureaucrats in government agencies. Bob
