Just did end-of-year book inventory. In 2017 I read 279 books. which averages out to be about 5.4 per week. Fortunately, 99% of them were free from Kindle Unlimited, BookBub, or the Austin Public Library. Would be quite an expensive hobby otherwise. 8-D

What sort of books are these, Fred? How many hours per day do you read, on average?
365 / 279 = 1.3, meaning that you average 1.3 days per book in addition to work, play, sleep, and so on. I'm guessing (and no offense intended) that these are mostly short easy books. I mean, it's unlikely that you are got through anything like "Crime and Punishment" (Dostoevsky) or "Beyond Good And Evil (Nietzsche) in a few hours.

Indeed, most are escapist reads. No 1,000 page tomes. Since I was 80% laid off back in Nov 2016 and only work 1 day per week now, I have more time for escapist reading. (Bad month last Nov, Trump and my job at the same time).
The majority of books I read are mysteries, although many are mystery/fantasy combos. (The sort where witches or some such solve the murders.) I prefer light stuff, with humor, but also read the Jack Reacher series, the Harry Bosch series, etc. Plus some straight SF and histories. It also helps that my pleasure-reading speed is about twice the average, so I can get through books twice as fast as most people. (Drives my wife crazy, since she can't keep up.)
I also like some older stuff, from the 1920s-30s, and those books tend to be shorter than the newer works. Back in the day a writer could churn out 70-90K word books, but now publishers prefer 130-200K. Just hold up an Agatha Christie paperback and compare it to a recent Steven King novel. 8->
I mainly use a Kindle Fire reader, but I also have the Kindle app on my cell phone, so I can read while waiting in line at a store or waiting at a car wash or whatever. An extra 30 minutes here and there adds up.

I noticed that my reading took a noticeable dip when I got a job that I could walk to instead of having to take the train.
