I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to computers.
This afternoon -- I was watching some YouTube videos and a little note came up that said "John Doe wants to share videos with you." Well, actually it said the name of one of my cousins who lives out of state. There were two buttons -- one an "x" the other a checkmark. I picked the checkmark because I figured he would be offended if I rejected the offer to "share videos".
Anyhow...nothing happened.
So now I am wondering -- what exactly did that mean? Does that mean that every time I watch a video online my cousin is going to know which ones I looked at? I watch some really strange stuff that he probably doesn't realize I'm into. I'm wondering if I should have just ignored it.
I tried looking on YouTube to see if there was any information about that agreeing to share videos thing but couldn't find any. Does anyone know what I agreed to?

It's something that YouTube set up in 2016, so people can share videos. BUT, you should never open anything from anyone unless you're absolutely certain that it's not a trick. Proper thing would have been to contact your cousin and ask if the share was real. Even stuff that seems to come from friends or family is suspect. Especially, if there's only a generic message or no message.
For example: "Wow, you really need to see this!". Could be a trick. But: "Wow, this reminds me of the time you and I went to Toronto together in 2012." is probably safe.

Hi Fred:
You're right. Particularly because my cousin has a very common name equivalent to a "John Smith" kind of thing. But I am pretty sure it's him -- he writes me every once in awhile out of the blue. He's actually my favorite cousin on that side of the family but was forced to move out of state years ago when his first wife ran off with his kids. If he wanted to see them -- he had to follow her so he ended up far away. He eventually married again and seems happy where he is -- but he does miss family.
Nothing more seems to have come from it -- but I am sure I'll hear from him before Christmas, so I'll ask him about it then.
