Been that way forever. When I was in basic (1969), we had to go to "church" every Sunday - either Catholic, Protestant, or Jewish. No option not to go. Same for dogtags - had to put a religion on them. After I was out of basic I was in the mood to cause trouble, so I got mine changed to Buddhist by sneaky red tape manipulation, which pissed off the top sergeant when he found out. Military chaplains are there to keep troops functioning. Anyone who starts to think that maybe Jesus wouldn't want Christians to kill gets a mind wipe by the chaplain. Lean, green killing machines, that's what Jesus wants. LOL. news.yahoo.com/u-military-problem-atheists-065000534.html

LOL...Buddhist. Back in WWII when my dad was drafted, there was only the choice on the paperwork for Catholic or Protestant. Well, he's Buddhist (and not a just johhny come lately Occidental Buddhist wananabe--he was born Buddhist). Well, there was no choice back then either. He had to check on the Protestant box.
And not to mention, the racial discimination. Blacks on one side. Whites on the other. Literally. And everything in-between were considered "White". Good enough if you weren't Black.

I have not been in the military. It would have been during the Viet Nam War, but I wasn't drafted -- high lottery number -- the only time I ever won anything worth winning.
But a friend (hearsay coming) told me that he always put "none" in the religion box, and it was always changed to "no preference." He never made an issue of it, figuring that if he were killed he really wouldn't care what words were said over him. But when he was being discharged he had to sign his name one last time, under penalty of perjury of course. And there, in a little box, one more time, was the term "no pref," something which he had never written anywhere in his life. He almost refused, but rather than opening that particular can of worms when he already had one foot out the door, he just signed and went home..
