If we (by which I mean the world) had begun working on alternatives to fossil fuels years ago when the alarm bell first started ringing, we might have solved the problem by now, or at least been well on the way. But alarm bells are only sounded by alarmists, so the world ignored them. And that includes the energy companies which had (and still have) the resources to do the research and find solutions.
Anyway, exploiting these resources in the formerly frozen north may be self limiting. More global warming equals more sea level rise -- gradually if we are lucky. But if Greenland and Antarctica suddenly melt, some of these operations (iron mine in Norway, for example) could be 80 or 100 meters under water.

Well, just lovely. Are we screwed or what? Or should I say that about those that come after us. In flood areas they build houses on stilits. So, I guess futurewise it's going to be cities on stilits. Has anyone not learned from the thousands washed out to sea from the huge Tsunami in Japan? Oh, but everyone else is just simply exempt. Especially if you're homongously wealthy.
