Mine is a box cutter. I use it for cuttting apart boxes (surprise), cutting the tape on sealed packages, cutting open plastic clamshell packages, cutting articles from newspapers and magazines, to name some.
What's your most useful tool you use around the house?

Also have a smaller version of a box cutter that gets lots of use, as well as step stools and pic stik grabbers.

I have two: Duct tape and a small screwdriver with 6 different screw heads stored in its handle. Runner up is Elmer's Glue. Good for metal to metal, ceramics, wood, whatever. Every bit of home repair that I do seems to involve one of these three things, if not all three.
I even used duct tape to repair an old set of sound-suppressing headphones that I keep at work. The foam on the ear coverings was decaying and turning to gray powder, so I used black duct tape to cover it up. Not pretty, but saved a perfectly good piece of electronics from being dumped. 8->

I also have to say a box cutter - a flat model that holds a single-edge razor blade. It's in my pocket nearly all the time and used for all the same things Lily mentioned, as well as any other time I need a small sharp edge. 12 for $15 at Office Depot, but I can usually find one for free somewhere. www.officedepot.com/a/products/906890/Pacific-Handy-Cutter-Box-Cutter/Second most often used tool is a small flashlight ("Maglite" brand, 2 AA batteries, LED bulb) that is always on my belt. I started carrying a flashlight when I became a safety/emergency warden at work - no telling when the power might fail and plunge us all into darkness. But I quickly came to wonder how I ever got along without it.

Next in line, after the razor knife and flashlight, in a small kitchen drawer, is a basic set of tools that take care of most household problems -- hammer, screwdrivers, pliers, Crescent wrench, wire cutters, tape measure, utility knife, etc.
Miss Molly (She Whom I Failed To Obey yesterday Despite my best efforts) was aghast at the idea of a drawer full of tools in "her" kitchen when we first lived together. But she quickly came 'round when something she needed right now was right there a couple times.
