This is an important story. Thanks, Bob, for bringing it to the board.

Terrible. But it's pretty much the same in Israel, where Jewish citizens enjoy rights and privileges - in housing, education, transport, commerce, politics, land ownership etc - denied to non-Jewish citizens. This is what always happens if you have a Muslim state, or a Jewish state, or a Christian state or whatever. But at least they're not slaughtering Christians wholesale.

Yes. This is why governments should be entirely secular, regardless of the religion/race/ethnicity of the majority of the people. Religious leaders who win elections always promise that they will not impose their own religious values on people who have a different religion, or no religion, but of course they always do. It's inevitable. How can they make decisions and pass laws that are contrary to their faith? In Egypt, Morsi pledged to uphold the country's secular constitution. Within a few months of being elected he had signed an Islamist constitution into law and was banning pubs, nightclubs, short skirts, "public displays of affection", blasphemy, homosexuality and the free press.
Not that the new guy is any better. Rule 2, never elect military leaders.
