Something really needs to be done about the police in the US. They seem to think the only way to deal with any situation is to shoot someone. Or something. In this case a frightened cow. Why?? Did they think it was a terrorist?

This does seem outrageously stupid and unnecessary. But without seeing what happened before the video begins, how is anyone to know what to think about it?

It doesn't matter what happened before. That is not the way to round up a cow. It's very obvious from their behavior in this video that they lost the plot and resorted to shooting. And the point is, this is part of a growing pattern of cops in the US being over-ready to use their weapons to gain control of situations - and people - that don't pose any serious threat. Using firearms should be the last resort. Increasingly, in the US, it is becoming the police's first reaction.

Not much difference between the US and Canada now, is there?

So if you were walking along the street one night and you saw a man dragging a woman into some bushes with a knife to her throat what would you do?
A. Intervene on the assumption that she was being attacked and raped B. Keep walking, on the basis that you didn't know the context of the situation, or what had happened before you arrived?

Not much difference between the US and Canada now, is there? You might not want to say that in a bar in Canada.

Is this question related to the cow shooting incident in some way?

You said: "It does matter what happened before. Context is always essential to understanding."
I'm making the point that context is not always essential; nor is it always necessary to know what happened before.

OK. So replace "always" with "often" or "usually" or "sometimes." Or say "It's remotely possible that context might be important on rare occasions."
My point was just that the video didn't tell the whole story.

And my point is that it is possible to make an intelligent and commonsense assessment of a situation without knowing either the context or the background. It is obvious from the video - regardless of what happened earlier - that the cops were trying to "round up" the cow, and that when they were unable to do so, they resorted to shooting at it. What did or didn't happen earlier is entirely irrelevant. What they were doing while the video was running was idiotic and unprofessional.

Pedestrians are not allowed on the freeways, as it is very dangerous for both the pedestrian and the drivers, so the officer did need to address the situation. It is unclear in this crappy cell phone video whether the officer needed to take her to the ground at all, but once she's down and he is sitting on her, it's difficult to imagine that there was any reason to hit her.

Are you kidding me?? Pedestrians aren't allowed on the freeway so it's acceptable for a cop to throw a woman to the ground and punch her in the face - hard! - 15 times? I can't believe you're serious. There are NO circumstances where a cop should need to throw a woman to the ground. If I'd been driving past and I was armed, I'd have shot that cop without hesitation. And if I was that woman's brother, husband, father or whatever, I'd find him and shoot him.

Who are you talking to, Zak? Not me, apparently, because I questioned (not defended) taking her to the ground and said I couldn't imagine any reason to hit her.
