I'm in a nostalgic mood. Was going over the days of the Borscht Belt (Grossinger) and the Catskills and the early Grand Concourse in the Bronx...
Then I remembered somethings about my first apartment. It was in a five story walkup. No problem then. Could go up and down the stairs with the utmost of ease. An elevator? What was that. The toilet was out in the hall, shared by the apartment on my side of the building (four apts. to a floor). The kitchen had an "ice box"...with room for a real block of ice...with a pan underneath to catch the dippings. There was a sink, with two faucets, one hot and one cold which could be connected by something bought at the hardware store. This was also my way of "showering", by standing in a tub. Wish I could remember what was done for heating the place. I definitely remember the rent...it was $18 @ month in a prime Manhattan location on 53rd Street.

Jem, you have sparked some memories for me too. Not quite as old as yours, as I'm only 66, but ----
Arrived in New York in 1965 to start freshman year at Fordham College. It was just a short walk up Fordham Road to the Grand Concourse to get on the D Train when we wanted to go "into the city," as the locals would say. Us silly college students thought the Bronx was part of the city.
A little later, down in the Village, I knew people who had bathtub-in-kitchen apartments, or no tub at all. One woman had a shower contraption that sat on top of the toilet (for drainage) with water hoses attached to the kitchen sink. Those were the days.

Raybar- Yes...Those were the days my friend...Remember that first radio in my grandma's apt. Those dial-up telephones always with a real live voice...Being able to dial an "O" for an operator. Not having to worry about frankenfish and other dangerous food. Or having to peel an apple before eating it. Or... Worrying about all that food that has pesticides on it. Of course there was the downside. My beloved Daddy died at 40. Today we know about high blood pressure and the effects of being overweight.

Do you recall an ice cream parlor called "Krum's"?

The name "Krum's" sounds familiar but I don't think I was ever there. I was never much for ice cream parlors, but went to Carvel for one of their 8000 flavors a little too often.
