People don't bother to read the original version of the story from Plato. He was supposedly visiting Egypt and some priests told him about Atlantis. The lost city was taking over Europe (not Africa) and enslaving all the known civilized world. But then they bumped up against Athens. The Athenians defeated the Atlantian army and chased them back to their island in rout. (Which island was later destroyed by the gods because of hubris). The Egyptian's story was that everyone in Athens had forgotten how mighty and wonderful their ancestors had once been - they saved Europe from Atlantis many generations ago. But then they forgot. So Plato was saying, let's never again forget how cool we Athenians are. Atlantis was a minor player in the story. 8->
