some article said that a pope hasn't resigned since the middle ages. One blogger theorized that he is stepping down while he has all his mental faculties so he can influence who the next pope will be, rather than be taken advantage of if his judgement is impaired.
Gonna be a lot of theorizing, but only he knows for sure.
So.... does this mean that now he and God are just pen pals?

I've been watching re-runs of the "Father Dowling Mysteries". I think Tom Bosley would make a great Pope. Unfortunately, he's dead. (Death stinks and I'm going to post a poem about that on another thread.)
Why is it such a shock that the Pope has resigned? Is it because he's God representative on earth and it's an affront to God to just quit? Seems strange to me. Kind of reminds me of countries where the rulers are considered divine. There's something really wrong with that, in my opinion.
And another thing wrong is this "brith control" issue. To me, that's a thinly deguised ploy to up the Catholic population count.

On another board someone posted that there have been only 4 popes that resigned. Two of them because they were being forced out, and one so he could get married (but that didn't work out so he tried to get his old job back)
