Dear Lily: I can't approve of deliberate attempts to cause violence or death. They are gleefully setting up a situation where someone innocent might end up dead for THEIR issues. And what will they say if some little kid gets killed in the crossfire? "We're sorry" hardly would cut it. I have no sympathy for either side in this. --Debutante Wait a minute. What do you mean "their issues"? Constitutional issues are everyone's issues. And furthermore, those people are not advocating violence, and never said they would be. It's the fundamentalists who would be gleefully hacking up the statue. It's them you need to talk to. If no one ever wanted to stand up for their rights because of the possiblity of violence, then most Americans would be speaking with an English accent and paying taxes for the tea they drink to Queen Elizabeth.

Ironic moment: I was just sipping a cup of Earl Grey as I read your post. True story. Okay carry on.

But we've already established that it isn't about the statue, haven't we? It's about the principle. And the principle is that in a democracy everyone - and every religious group - should have the same rights, and the same freedom of expression.

Dear Zak:
I don't think this principle utilizing "Satanism" is worth the risk. I am not exactly sure what Satanists believe -- but they are often associated with child sacrifice and other things which, are frankly illegal. Hence, this "statement" is not about the constitutional principle involved, but about provocation to incite a reaction. If someone is killed or injured, how is this at all "helpful"?
Let the Jewish people erect a Star of David, the Hindus a statue of Krishna, the Buddhists of Buddha -- and you'll satisfy the principle without risking violence.

Dear Mcans:
I am not sure about that -- I once met a police detective who claimed to work in a division that investigated such things. So...go figure -- would they have such a thing if there wasn't some concern that it existed?

The following is an article that goes more into the story and background of this "satan monument" controversy. I'm pasting the entire article to make sure that the article is actually read. So here it is. Hopefully this will explain what is actually going on.
