The NY Times did not quote what the killer actually said. Therefore we cannot know what the killer was thinking. Non sequitur. And the NYT and most mainstream news claim that they do know what the killer was thinking.
Why do you think they're wrong?

If they claim that the know what the killer was thinking, then why didn't they quote what he actually said?
Or have you changed your mind about the importance of supplying supporting quotes

Why do you think they're wrong, Bob?
Complex Question Fallacy. Where did I say that they were wrong? I didn't.
What I did say is that they did not support their claims with actual quotes from the killer's manifesto. Without actual quotes from the source, we cannot tell if the article is right or not.
Didn't you make a point of having to provide quotes from the actual text before drawing conclusions?

So where is the contradiction? If the Times is claiming that we can know what the killer was thinking without showing actual quotes, then what exactly are they using for evidence?
And how come you now seem to be saying that direct quotes no longer matter? Why the change of heart?

If you want to read the shooter's screed, then why haven't you looked for it yourself?

I looked for it but I couldn't find it.
The point is without that manifesto, we don't really know what he said or what his reasons were.
You made such a big point about providing supporting quotes that I was sure you would agree on this.

So you deny that he's a white supremacist?

I don't know if the El Paso shooter was a white supremacist or not. His manifesto has not been released.

So you can't tell from his actions alone?

Of course not. Maybe the shooter was totally insane and thought that he was shooting invaders from outer space. Until you read his manifesto, you cannot draw conclusions as to his motives.
