From Wired News: “You know those sexual enhancement dietary supplements for sale at gas stations and markets across the country? Beware, they might actually be Viagra. Or steroids. Or an antidepressant. Many supposed dietary supplements for weight loss, erectile dysfunction, and muscle building may contain actual pharmaceuticals—but you likely have no way of knowing what's in them.” “Between 2007 and 2016, the FDA issued warnings about unapproved pharmaceutical ingredients in 776 dietary supplements, “ So why doesn’t the FDA stop this? Back in the Reagan 80s Congress passed some dietary supplement deregulation laws (in the name of Freedom) that pretty much took regulation of that industry away from the FDA. Unlike with drugs, the FDA can only act AFTER a product is on the shelves and only if someone complains. And supplements don’t have to prove that they actually do anything before they're sold, so you really can sell sugar pills and market the hell out them as being “good’ for what ails you. A 2015 study found that about 23,000 people per year in the US end up in an ER each due to dietary supplements. Here’s an industry that definitely needs more government regulation, not less. So if you take "dietary supplements" (and most people do), like Elmer Fudd says, "Be very, very careful." www.wired.com/story/dietary-supplements-can-contain-viagra-steroids-or-worse/

" . . . dietary supplements for sale at gas stations . . . "
I once told a vendor at a swap meet that "the day I buy pharmaceuticals from some guy in a parking lot, you'll know I've lost my mind." He seemed to find that a little offensive, and he wasn't pleased when I asked what medical studies supported his claims.
