When I was just reading Joan's post, my entire screen turned red with the message about something like a virus and I shouldn't try to do anything but call the number below to a Microsoft tech. Of course I cut the power to the my computer and then powered on again and came back here.

If the board has been hacked, it's most likely the Proboards system, not FACTS directly. Or it might have been activated somehow by an advertisement. Who knows?
I haven't seen that particular "warning," but I have gotten similar ones.

I've seen this warning, but I don't recall if it came while on FACTS. I always do what lily did, immediately power off then come back on.

I got that same warning, but I wasn't on FACTS. I had clicked on one of those sponsored "quizzes." I had to reboot to make it go away.

Internet Explorer 11. But I was on AOL when it happened. I think they also use IE.

I've seen the same message while using different computers, different browsers, and on different web sites. The only common denominator is that I was on the internet somewhere. Not sure where the nasty thing comes from, but it's not specifically from FACTS.

Forgot to add - you may be able to shut the screen off without a total reboot. For Windows, open Task Manager (ctrl-alt-delete). Click the Applications tab and you can see all the programs you're currently running. Find the browser that your have open (Chrome, Firefox, IE, etc.), click it and select "End Task" from the options on the bottom of the screen.
This may or may not work for you, but if it does work, it's easier than a total reboot. Oh, and if your browser comes up with a message about shutting down unexpectedly and asks if you want to reopen the last site you were on, say no.
I keep Task Manger open all the time in the Processes tab, just because I like to see what's running in the background. If things start slowing down, I check to see what's eating up the CPU time.

Fred, as far as I remember it covered the whole desktop, so how could I get to the task manager? But maybe I was in too much of a rush to notice. I just knew if I cut the power it would be gone and I wouldn't have to deal with it. And rebooting is not a problem fpr me, unless of course, I was writing my novel and I hadn't saved it yet.  |
